  1. If you are viewing this from Archives, click the F6 button located below
  2. HELP on Archives menu.  (All of those other button color objects are
  3. buttons too!  Read TUTOR.TXT for a quick description of the buttons and
  4. features of Archives.)

  6. CAUTION: There is one major change.  Added two Quick checkout options
  7.      located under the  Decompress menu!!!!
  8.  
  9.        To Checkout !  (your checkout directory is here, ie \CHK\)
  10.        To Normal !    (your normal decompress to directory is here)
  11.  
  12.     Following standard Windows conventions, the exclamation point
  13.     means that these functions will execute without a confirmation!
  14.     When you click the menu, the function executes right then and
  15.     there...
  16.  
  17.     The directory that these two functions decompress to is setup
  18.     under the Configuration + Setup Register.
  19.  
  20.     Any files that you decompress with these 2 new functions will
  21.     overwrite any existing files in the decompressed to directory
  22.     that have the same name as a file being decompressed.  Unless
  23.     you turn the 'Always Overwrite' Off under [Configure] [Setup
  24.     Setup or Register] Setup Part C.
  25.  
  26.     The 'old decompress' dialog box is still available under
  27.     'Details...'   This also follows windows conventions, ie the
  28.     three ... means that a dialog box or confirmation follows.
  29.  
  30. User Request for Version 3.09 (Not released yet)
  31.  
  32.     This version may have a user modifiable dialog box or menu
  33.     for running programs, decompressing, or whatever.  I want
  34.     to know what you want to do with this menu so I can do my
  35.     best to give it the flexibility you need.  Please drop me
  36.     a note.  Unfortunately, I can't tell you more about
  37.     Version 3.09.  In my opinion, Version 3.08 is very good.
  38.     Version 3.09 is exciting.  You won't believe what
  39.     Version 3.09 is going to do.

  41.     I will be supporting *.ARJ compressed files in version 3.09.

  45. MAJOR CHANGES / BUG FIXES:
  46.  
  47. A.    Fixed the problem where sometimes the several of the drive
  48.     buttons would simultaneously be highlighted.
  49.  
  50. B.    The MOUSE and the ENTER key work the same in the Files Window and
  51.     the Viewer Window.  (Or nearly the same considering that the
  52.     Viewer Window will display the contents of the compressed file
  53.     and the Files Window cannot.)
  54.  
  55. C.    Added a basic PRINT TEXT file(s) function and print your
  56.     Viewer Window selection if viewing the contents of a file.
  57.     (I'll have to add some additional printer options later.
  58.     eg. margins, fonts,...)
  59.  
  60.     The print function works similar to the copy function.  You
  61.     can print multiple DOS files if you select multiple DOS files
  62.     in the Viewer Window when the FileStats are showing.  (The
  63.     FileStats are showing when FileStat button is highlighted.)
  64.  
  65.     If you open a file for viewing in the Viewer Window, you can
  66.     highlight portions of this file for printing.  The only
  67.     restriction is that Archives cannot (yet) select rows greater
  68.     than the 2000th.  If you want to print something that is greater
  69.     than the 2000th row, your only option (at this time) is to print
  70.     the whole file.
  71.  
  72.     The print function was written to print TEXT files and not BINARY
  73.     files.  The non-text characters are omitted if you print a binary
  74.     file.
  75.  
  76. D.    Now if you open a compressed file and select File+Copy or
  77.     File+Delete, the decompress dialog box opens.  Saves you a step
  78.     if you forgot that the file was a compressed file.
  79.  
  80. E.    Changed SCAN to start up always ON.  You can turn it OFF (look
  81.     under the Decompress menu, but the OFF setting is not saved to
  82.     ARCHV.INI).  This automatic scan only works when you decompress
  83.     a file.
  84.  
  85.     Additionally, if your virus protection program reports an
  86.     errorlevel of 1 or greater when a virus is found (like SCAN does),
  87.     then Archives will beep and pause if a virus is found even when
  88.     the Archives' BEEP and PAUSE function is turned off for
  89.     decompression.
  90.  
  91. F.    Archives will select files or rows for printing, file copying, etc
  92.     up to the 2000th row.  I made this change to improve the print
  93.     feature.
  94.  
  95. G.    Note to the Beta Testers, the final release of Version 3.08
  96.     includes some extra error checking in the print function in case
  97.     formfeeds are imbedded in the document, and added a left margin
  98.     setting.
  99.  
  100.     Since Windows already has a top margin, Archives strips off the
  101.     linefeeds enbedded in a text document at the top of each page
  102.     until a row with text or spaces exists.  I printed many, many text
  103.     documents and found this to be the best option to get Windows print
  104.     to match a DOS print function as closely as possible.
  105.  
  106.     And finally, the Right Margin dialog box gives a best guess of the
  107.     number of characters to lead the right margin with based on the
  108.     length of the single longest line of the whole document if the
  109.     document is opened in the Viewer Window.  This assumes that your
  110.     printer prints 80 characters per line.  If you want to change this
  111.     number, you'll have to manually edit the ARCHV.INI line beginning
  112.     with CharWidthPrn=80 to whatever number you wish.  Like Windows
  113.     Archives normally requires to be closed and reopened before any
  114.     manual changes to the INI file take affect.
  115.  
  116. G.    Note to the Beta Testers, the final release of Version 3.08
  117.     eliminated SCAN from the Compress Dialog box since I added it
  118.     as a decompress menu item (where it belongs).
  119.  
  120.     To scan a file select a file in the viewer window when the
  121.     FileStats are diaplayed and chose scan from the Run Dialog box.
  122.     The Accelerator Key for this is Shift+F11.
  123.  
  124.     To scan a directory, or drive select the Full menu and look
  125.     under the Run menu item on the main menu. The Accelerator Keys
  126.     for these functions are Shift+F12 and Ctrl+Shift+F12 respectively.

  128.     To scan a file immediately after decompressing the file, check
  129.     the Decompress + Always Scan main menu item.

  134.     Note: Version 3.07 was issued only to the Archives Beta Testers.

  136. MAJOR CHANGES / BUG FIXES:

  138. A.    Eliminated Arcsetup.exe and added Archv.INI.  Arcsetup.exe was
  139.     used to configure Archives.  Using an INI files allows Archives
  140.     to configure itself.
  141.  
  142.     This increased the size of Archives; however, ALL users
  143.     polled kept ArcSetup on their computers uncompressed.  The net
  144.     result is that Archives is now nearly as small as the previous
  145.     version's ArcSetup plus Archives, even with all of the
  146.     enhancements in this version!
  147.  
  148.     Unregistered users can now also run Archv286.exe.
  149.  
  150. B.    Added Dynamic Data Exchange.  Located under the [Configure] menu of
  151.     Archives.  Link 2 Archives and copy files from     one Archives to
  152.     the other.  Compress or decompress from one Archives to the
  153.     other,..., etc.
  154.  
  155. C.    Archives is improving it algorithm for determining program types
  156.     when you double click on a non-compressed file and Now looks in
  157.     the WIN.INI file for "EXTENSIONS" AS WELL.  Excluding this
  158.     'feature' was an oversight on my part.
  159.  
  160.     NOW WHEN YOU WANT TO RUN A PROGRAM OR FILE SELECTED IN THE
  161.     FILES WINDOW:
  162.  
  163.     - Click anywhere in the Files Window with the RIGHT MOUSE Button,
  164.       or use the Ctrl+ENTER key when the Files Window has the focus,
  165.       or press the F9 function key, or CLICK the [Run] Button.  (Whew,
  166.       why so many different ways to do this?  Because I'm trying
  167.       to make Archives work the way you think it should, and each
  168.       one of you think different things.  Don't memorize all of the
  169.       ways, just use the one(s) that make sense to you.)
  170.  
  171.     Double click with the left mouse button on an *.EXE or *.COM
  172.     file now, and instead of dumping the file contents to the Viewer
  173.     Window if it is not a compressed executable file it will write
  174.     the best guess of the type of program to the Viewer Window.
  175.     eg, Windows, Definitely Windows 3.0, DOS, etc.
  176.  
  177.     Archives will still read binary type files so you can view the
  178.     contents of your Word Processor.
  179.  
  180.     If for some reason you want to view the contents of the *.EXE
  181.     program, click on the [read] button with the left mouse.
  182.  
  183. D.    Greatly improved the function, appearance, and definitions of the
  184.     BUTTONS on the main program.  Added drive selector buttons.  Now,
  185.     I need to develop something for the folks running DOS 4.0 or
  186.     DOS 5.0 with one large drive.  (The [dir] button may help some.)
  187.  
  188.     Reverse highlighted the buttons to show the user's current
  189.     selection as appropriate.
  190.  
  191. E.    MAJOR, MAJOR problem was corrected.  If a user had 2 copies of
  192.     ARCH.PIF on their computer and both were in their path
  193.     or the one was in the path statement and the other in the same
  194.     directory as Archives, then the %$$&#* program would cycle,
  195.     telling them that they did not change ARCH.PIF.  Dumb procedure
  196.     problem on my part.
  197.  
  198.     Now Archives does the normal Windows look for program.  The 1st
  199.     look is in the directory where Archives.exe or Arcv286.exe is
  200.     executed, then the users path.
  201.  
  202. F.    Added support for the new LHA.EXE compressed files.  You can use
  203.     either LHARC or LHA.EXE with Archives for *.LZH compressed files;
  204.     although I would get a copy of the LHA format since it is
  205.     significantly better.
  206.  
  207. G.    Added support for Always running your virus protector when you
  208.     decompress a file.  Eventually will make this a configurable
  209.     & saved setting along with other settings.  Look under the
  210.     Decompress menu.
  211.  
  212. H.    Added [Chain Checkout] and [Chain Checkin].  Look under the
  213.     Decompress menu for [Chain Checkout] and under the Compress Menu
  214.     for [Chain Checkin].  These functions were available under the
  215.     last version, but was burried in the Details... dialog boxes
  216.     for Compress and Decompress.  To Chain Checkout a compressed
  217.     file, first double click on the compressed files so you are
  218.     showing its contents.  Then select chain checkout.  After the
  219.     file is decompressed, a second copy of Archives will open showing
  220.     that files contents.  Selecting Chain Checkin will close that
  221.     Second copy of Archives and open the 1st copy.  The temporary
  222.         files and directory are automatically deleted.
  223.  
  224. MINOR CHANGES / BUG FIXES:  Version 3.07
  225.  
  226. 1.    Bug fix - Fixed the Mask Window so that the user could enter
  227.     a ? as a substitution character and not have the Viewer Window
  228.     select all of the files at the same time.  (Why would you want to
  229.     change the Mask?  Read TUTOR.TXT)
  230.  
  231.     Also fixed the Mask Window so that the user could enter a backslash
  232.     and not have the Viewer Window select all of the files at the same
  233.     time.
  234.  
  235. 2.    Modified a few of the dialog boxes to make them more
  236.     quickly readable (Copy, Rename, Run).  And, added the Accelerator
  237.     Keys (Hot Keys) to the Dialog Boxes that would execute that function
  238.     from the Main Window as reminders, to help users learn these keys.
  239.     Although, as you probably can tell from the the features of the
  240.     program, I prefer to use the mouse.
  241.  
  242. 3.    Added additional error checking to protect checkout data.
  243.  
  244. 4.    Although Archives was not written to be a menu program, several
  245.     users requested to add to Archives a method to execute Windows
  246.     Control Programs.  Archives also has an option to look first to
  247.     see if they are already running and then switch to them if already
  248.     running, else Archives will execute the program.
  249.  
  250.     These include, switching to the users shell, found in SYSTEM.INI;
  251.     and running Control Panel, Print Manager, etc.  Look under the RUN
  252.     menu and select Control Programs.
  253.  
  254.     The Accelerator Key (Hot Key) is F4 for the 'Run Control Programs
  255.     Menu'.
  256.  
  257.     This also helps when I'm trying to assist a user with setting up
  258.     Archives.
  259.  
  260.     This added very little code to Archives since most of the LOOK and
  261.     if not already running then EXECUTE functions were already written
  262.     for Archives DDE functions.
  263.  
  264.     PS,    I want to add the features you need, but if you don't call
  265.         or write to tell me what you need....

  267. 5.    Users can switch to their start up program, normally their menu,
  268.     by pressing F10 in Archives.  
  269.  
  270.     Run with _DEFAULT.PIF use to be F10, now is F11.  Run with ARCH.PIF
  271.     use to be F11, now is Ctrl+Enter or Right Mouse click in the
  272.     Files Window if the program listed in the Files Window is a
  273.     DOS program.
  274.  
  275. 6.    Also changed Alt+F10 to alternate between Maximized and the normal
  276.     Windows Restore versus restoring to the Start up window position.
  277.  
  278.     For those who liked the Start up Restore, this Accelerator Key
  279.     (Hot Key) is Alt+Ctrl+F10.
  280.  
  281.     All of the Accelerator Keys are visible from the Full Menu.
  282.  
  283. 7.    Oh yeah, Archives now has two menus.  A Full Menu and a Short Menu.
  284.  
  285.     Reason:  The Short Menu uses less system resources, but the long
  286.     menu shows you all of the accelerator keys.
  287.  
  288. 8.    Modified the dialog boxes slightly so that the underlines on
  289.     Accelerator Keys (Hot Keys) are displayed on CGA thru better than
  290.     super VGA systems.
  291.  
  292. 9.    Gave the user the option to have DOS 'BEEP & PAUSE' ON or OFF when
  293.     compressing & decompressing files.  With the DOS 'BEEP & PAUSE' OFF
  294.     the DOS window will open and close automatically if you check
  295.     the Close Window on Exit checkbox in your _DEFAULT.PIF and ARCH.PIF
  296.     files.
  297.  
  298.     With the DOS 'BEEP & PAUSE' ON, you will get a beep and have a
  299.     message to 'Hit a key when Ready'.
  300.  
  301. 10.    ArcSetup use to append the extensions and everything following the
  302.     extensions from programs entered in Setup-Part-A.  This prevented
  303.     one user from entering special switches in his virus protection
  304.     program.  First of all, ArcSetup doesn't exist any more.  Now you
  305.     can enter the switches in Archives [Configure] [Setup or Register]
  306.     and Archives will display and use these switches in your
  307.     Run dialog box.
  308.  
  309.     This also allows users to use programs like LIST as their
  310.     'Windows Browser (Viewer).  Entered in Setup-Part-B.
  311.  
  312.      Example:    Using the [Configure] [Setup or Register] menu,
  313.         select [Setup Part B].  In the [Use Windows Browser
  314.         (Viewer)] edit text box, enter:
  315.  
  316.         drive:\directory\ARCH.PIF LIST.EXE
  317.  
  318.     And if you are running in Enhanced Mode, then your DOS LIST program
  319.     will run in a DOS Window.  You don't need to add the
  320.     drive:\directory\ARCH.PIF if you run Windows in Standard or Real
  321.     Modes and the DOS LIST.EXE will execute Full Screen.
  322.     
  323. 12.    Added test integrity for ARC, LZH and ZIP files to the run dialog
  324.     box.  Hot Key is Ctrl+F11.

  328.     Archives uses many Accelerator Keys.  If any of these interfere
  329.     with existing programs that you are using, please call me.  I'm
  330.     not aware of any problems to-date, but I can easily add options
  331.     to the configuration of Archives to turn off Accelerator Keys.

  363.     including updating the compressed file with the date & time
  364.     of the latest internal file.

  372. 1.    Significantly changed the memory management.  The program as
  373.     stored on your hard disk is larger than before, but the
  374.     memory used by the system is much smaller ~ 35K.

  376.     This version requires significantly less memory to run, almost
  377.     all of the code is discardable.

  379. 2.    Allowed the system to make the filename AND DIRECTORY during
  380.     the compress procedure.

  382. 3.    Compiled a 286 version named ARCHV286.EXE.  Run this version if
  383.     you never run Archives while Windows is in the REAL mode.  This
  384.     version will run in both Standard & Enhanced Modes of windows
  385.     (PROTECTED).  It is slightly smaller, and slightly faster to run
  386.     versus the REAL mode version.  This version will require the user
  387.     to be registered before it will run.

  389.     You cannot run both programs at the same time!!!!!!!!

  391. 4.    Added a maximize Task Yield function to the Configure menu.
  392.     When activated, the application will yield windows time to
  393.     other applications.  This feature is very useful when running
  394.     Archives while running a communications program in the
  395.     background.  This feature is activated from the Configure
  396.     menu.  To see this function work, you'll need to have at least
  397.     windows clock running or download/upload a file using a Windows
  398.     communications program.  Archives even starts from File Manager
  399.     without stopping the clock for the complete start-up, and
  400.     without a significant delay in start up appearance to the user.
  401.  
  402.     Although, if your communications program is busy, the yielding
  403.     to the communications program slows some of Archives functions
  404.     2 to 6 times versus when the yield is off.  Whether or not you
  405.     use yield depends on your priorities, personal time or
  406.     communications speed.

  408. 5.    Modified the functions to work with foreign characters in file
  409.     names and directory names.
  410.

  434. PS    In one of the versions of the future, I'm going to work on
  435.     reducing the code size.  I've been concentrating on reducing
  436.     the Window's resources and amount of Windows memory and adding
  437.     features in the above versions.  The code can be reduced by
  438.     approximately 10%.
